CARTAGO, COSTA RICA, March 3, 2025 – Heraeus Medevio, a full-service contract design, development, and manufacturing partner to medical device companies around the world, announced the completion of its Costa Rica site’s Phase III expansion on Wednesday, February 26, initiated by the installation of equipment and a grand opening ceremony with global leadership and local government officials.
Representing a $35 million investment, Heraeus Medevio’s Phase III expansion adds approximately 118,400 square feet (11,000 square meters) and 500 jobs to its Costa Rica site in Cartago’s La Lima Free Zone. The new two-story Center of Excellence was designed to optimize space for strategic, long-term manufacturing projects, adding an ISO class seven clean room on the first level, an ISO class eight clean room on the second floor, corporate offices, meeting rooms, and cafeteria.

The site’s expansion will drive innovation for Heraeus Medevio’s partners in the design, development, and manufacturing of electrophysiology sub-assemblies and finished devices, neuromodulation leads, catheters, guidewires, snare kits, and vascular components. With the addition of Heraeus Medevio’s first electrophysiology assembly line and the site’s first R&D laboratory, Heraeus Medevio will expand its end-to-end design and development services, helping its customers overcome complex challenges and bring better medical devices to market faster.
Since the grand opening of Phase I in 2017, the team has efficiently executed two expansions. Phase II construction began in February of 2022 and was completed in May of 2023, immediately initiating the groundbreaking of Phase III. “Expanding the Costa Site has been a key pillar in Medevio’s global strategy. The distinctive level of talent, proximity to our customers, and vibrant ecosystem enable a simplified supply chain, efficient collaboration, and strategic manufacturing capacity for our valued customers,” states Markus Kriegl, Executive Vice President of Global Operations. Upon the completion of Phase III, the site now occupies approximately 226,000 square feet (21,000 square meters), with operations expected to begin in July 2025.
